The Steward This guys has been building one for his personal use for some time now.
www.dupontcastle.com Merlin And what an ugly one! It should be forbidden to build such things (my point of view). Peter That is supposed to look like a castle!
Bring back the Victorians.
PeterBusboom What do you think of this one?
www.busboomcastle.com gizmoraleon the dupont castle is one of the best I have seen for making the architecture period. start with a keep and build out, thats just what the ancients did. it may be too practical for some people, but what were castles if not inventions of neccesity and a practical solution to violent and impractiacl times. kudos to the dupont castle team! gizmoraleon not to leave out the accomplisments of the busboom team. though the overall design is not my preference, I love the attention to detail and the quality craftsmanship present in the castle. I thing your drawbridge is great, and I give you full marks for your interior decor and styling. I would love to see larger pictures on your site though. great job. though I must warn you that if yours is the only working drawbridge now it shan't be for long. great job, and thanks. Merlin I don't know if any of you guys have ever seen a real medieval castle, its materials, functions and architectural design. These ones look like their builders would only have seen some bad drawn fairytale-books. What's the point in building such things??? Busboom No, I've never seen a real Medieval castle. Someday I hope to be able to afford to visit Europe. My original design was more true to the original architecture, but I couldn't afford that (real stone, open courtyard, walls 16 feet thick, etc.). So I had to scale back, scale back, keep scaling back until it was within my reach. That is why the towers ended up being square instead of round or octagonal, and why there's only two, for example.
I also didn't want the roof to leak, and I wanted it to be warm and cozy, unlike the originals.
Why build it? 1. Because it wasn't there 2. Because it is strong and safe 3. Because the architectural style has been around 1500 years and is still popular (unlike 'fad' housing) 4. Because the kids like it 5. Because it is unique in our part of the world 6. Because it is ostentatious 7. Because I want to live happily ever after 8. Because I could - thank God I live in the USA, where hard work pays off and we have the freedom to do such things. I probably wouldn't have been able to accomplish this in any other country based on my (lack of) education and pay scale.Busboom To Gizmoraleon - thank you for the compliments. If anyone else builds a working drawbridge, I might have to declare war upon their castle!
