KatYour website is truly impressive. I was wondering if you were interested in having a Russian version of it. I could translate and support it, since I believe such information would be of great interest to Russians willing to know UK history or planning a trip to see castles and other historical places. Many Russians grew up reading books like Ivanhoe or Robin Hood, so I think that here in Russia you will find genuine interest and many perspective visitors of your site as well as future tourists wishing to see UK history in vivo.
MerlinWell, I hope the Russians are not only interested in UK-castles but in continental-european ones as well! It's a very interesting idea to translate the site... Please contact our Administrator Ted Monk to ask him what he thinks about it:

KatSorry for narrowing it to the UK, I was simply looking for the info specifically on UK castles, but you're right, it doesn't have to be UK only. Definitely, this could be broader. Thanks, I'll gladly contact the Administrator. BTW, we also have sor of castles in Russia - they are called 'kremls', (you might have heard about Moscow Kremlin, and many other old cities have them). So maybe I can also add some valuable info abut them, suggest a link or something.
AJRCertainly. We welcome information on castles from all over the world.
MerlinKat, this would be great! One of us moderators is from Romania, and we would like to have someone with knowledge of the castles further east. I'm well aware of the many interesting kremls and fortified abbeys in Russia and the Ukraine. My brother traveled through this area last year and visited some of them.
ipfloYes, it sounds very good. Unfortunately the information about castles (or manor houses) in Russia is not so good here in Western Europe.

LevanIt's great to hear of your interest in CastleQuest and even more so to hear that you're prepared to put your own time and effort into helping others appreciate the subject.

I'm sure that Russian translations would be very welcome.

I'm not sure how we'd go about the mechanics of setting-up a Russian language section of the site. Perhaps we could add a forum, from which you add chosen elements of the site? I doubt that you'll have time to translate everything (neither would everything be worthwhile!).

Another option might be to add replies to particularly interesting postings, which provide a translation. If you do this, it'd be helpful for non-Russian users if you were to add a message at the top in English stating that "This is a Russian translation..." - this would then reassure non-Russian users that it isn't a system fault!

I guess we'll also need to check whether bulletin board around which CastleQuest is built is able to support the Russian character set without causing problems.

Another issues is that I'm not sure whether any of the Moderator team have the skills to monitor any Russian language postings - are you volunteering!? Unfortunately, there's a lot of porn and other spam circulating the net with a Russian character set, which is difficult to trap in filters because we don't enough of the language to set them up (e.g. I don't know the Russian for a certain well known brand of impotence pill so I can't filter out messages that include it!).

Anyway, these are just suggestions - decisions in this area belong to "the Scribe" who will need to balance the benefits of the new service with the effort that will be required to support it.

Whilst not especially ideal, I often use some of the online tools for providing a rough translation of sites in other languages - are any of these any use in Russian?

As suggested by some of the others - we'd certain love to hear more about Russian castles - not much information gets through to those of us who live outside of Russia.

I hold the view that CastleQuest has become very much richer since we've had greater involvement from folks outside of USA and the UK.

Some of the other parts of the world from which further exertise would be particularly welcome include the Middle-East, all regions of Asia and South America. To be honest, shamefully, I don't even know whether castles or similar even exist in all parts of the world!

MariaKat, I think your idea is great.
Levan, I have a friend who speaks Russian (she is from the Moldavian Republic). Maybe I can ask her to help us, look over the postings once a week or something.
