Thanks ------------------ Castles are often subdivided into different wards called Baileys, usually you get an inner and outer bailey, sometimes a middle bailey. The outer bailey generally contains workshops and stables called smithys and stables. The inner bailey contains the higher status buildings are rooms. The gatehouse might be protected by a Barbican, a small enclosure before the gate. Most, but not all, castles have a Keep, or Donjon (dungeon is a curruption of this term). The Keep would generally have a ground floor cellar (often, incorrectly, called the dungeon), where supplies were stored; A first floor Hall, where everyone ate, meetings were held, feast had, court cases were judged - basically the working center of a castle; A second floor Solar, which was the lords private chamber, where he entertained only his most important guests, he slept, kept his munuments (important documents). In many keeps there was also a chapel (often dedicated to St Micheal, the soldier saint). There was often a larger, more impossing Hall and chapel in the Inner Bailey, as the defensive nature of the keep to not lend itself to grand spacious buildings. The Kitchen was usually a seperate building close to, but not part of, the Hall. Between the kitchen and the Hall would usually be the Pantry, where dry foodstuff were stored. (From Pan, the french for bread, the most common stuff stored in a pantry) and the Buttery, where liquids were stored (Beer, cider and wine in barrels called Butts). Please note butter is stored in the pantry. There that should get you started. ------------------ ------------------ Gordon. Sorry, I should made myself a bit clearer. Basically I'm trying to put togeteher a web site for the medieval reenactment group I belong to call "Citadel" and I want to base the site on the structure of a Castle/Citadel, using the names of the various "rooms" as the names for the different parts of the website. So I after the names of the various rooms.
Thanks,
Steve MaynardPhilip Davis Ok then;
The top of the keep might have turrets, sometimes called Bartizans, particularly if corbelled out over the walls.
