Moderators - I e-mailed the plans direct. However, they were copied from one of Salter's books and I didn't post them here, because of the copyright. Hope this was okay. Many of us trade emails with members as you have done and haveing to send photos or other items it is often the best way.
Philip on his site has scaned blue prints as well as the Scrib in the photo archive and i have never heard of some one being upset over those.

As I understand it you require the author's permission to reproduce a plan, diagram or picture (text is different and libraries will allow the copying of up to 10% of a book). However, I believe copyright is a civil rather than criminal law so the author would have to sue for breach of copyright. Your email may be a technical breach of copyright but the chance of you being sued is slim. In the end it's worth remembering that copyright is there to protect an author's income and if you reproduce things in a way which will potential damage this income you may well be sued. On the other hand if you reproduce bits of an authors work in a manner which is likely to encourage people to be interested in that author's work (and buy more of their books) then you're not likely to be sued. The plans I have available on my site are there to encourage people in an interest of medieval castles and I make no monies whatsoever from them. However, it is remiss of me not to ask the authors permission and merely to assume that they will understand that my use of their work is philanthropic.

Secreta Secretorumduncan I've just been told by someone that if you reproduce something you should always give creadit to the author and or the book. I have to also say that the person who told me these things is not a specialist in copy right laws

I wouldn't worry too much as long as your not makeing money on any of it.wurdsmiff Philip has the gist of it, and most authors are grateful for a little free advertising, which short quotes/extracts amount to.
However the publisher also has rights, although the author may hold the copyright. The same basic rules apply. The important thing is not to use text or any item covered under the copyright in such a way as to cause offence, and plagiarism is the most offensive thing of all.
Most copyright statements specifically prohibit the storage of any part of a work in an electronic retrieval system, photocopying etc, however there is usually a statement of exemption for the purposes of review or education. In a broad sense we meet the latter criteria, and often the first.
Suing for breach of copyright can be an expensive business, and the benefits of doing so would have to outweigh the costs before prosecution was sought. However we should always respect the rights of other individuals, and provide them with credit for their own work. After all if it weren't for authors, how much would we all know?
