Steve-O-GerstBaker, Chandler, Miller, Miner, Potter, Smith...

There are thousands of these today, people named after occupations that were by no means noble. Probably, there are such names in other languages too.

Is there a comprehensive list of all of them? Where they came from, what they did and such?

PeterThere may well be, but I'd hate to think of the cost of such a volume.
I have several general books on the subject. Which are pretty good. As most people are looking for a specific name (or maybe 2/3), there would be do need to access such a book.
This is where a good old fashioned general library comes in handy.

Steve-O-GerstHmm. But what about an online reference? Surely there are millions of people with such names, looking to find out more about their history.
PeterThere are; but you want to try wading through page after page. So many different sites. A lot you have to register, or even pay fees to access information.
Peter
PaulI found this site some time ago.
I can't vouch for its accuracy though.
