Gordon. [This message has been edited by wurdsmiff (edited 01-03-2000).] ------------------ ------------------ Gordon.carolhill Yes, I went to the U.K. and Ireland a few years ago, and an elderly lady asked me to get a picture of Elmley Castle. This castle is now in ruins and doesn't have much left. But I was wandering if anyone knew how or where I could get a picture of the ruins, because I didn't go near it..It is in Herefordshire and Worcester in Western England, near Wales..If you could help, it would be greatly appreciated. wurdsmiff I personally can't help much more than what follows. Being a Scot, I don't venture south much in case I get captured!!
My impression having looked through several sites which relate to the village of Elmley Castle is that a motte of the earlier castle is all that is left to be seen. The stones from the later Elmley Castle were used to build Pershore Bridge, 11 miles away. However the following page gives a little history of the castle,it's village and some photos of the Norman church.

These lie within an Iron Age rampart which follows the contours of the hill. Excavations have uncovered some of the stone curtain which crowned the ringwork bank. Inside the ringwork are the rubble footings of a square structure, probably the forebuilding of a vanished keep. The castle was probably raised by the D'Abitots before 1100. It passed to the Beauchamps, but its elevated site can never have been convenient and they abandoned it after aquiring Warwick Castle in 1268 Philip Davis Just put on the web is an excellent site by Andrew Muller at http://members.xoom.com/AndrewMuller/Castles.html (thanks to COTW new links for this). This site contains a page on Elmley including a photo at http://members.xoom.com/AndrewMuller/elmley.html .
I've just spent the weekend browsing this one site.
