ChazAmericaGood Day,

I am attempting to find information about my ancestry and their Meldenhall or Mildenhall Castle in England. Unfortunately, I do not know what region it is in.

Help?

LevanThere is certainly a Mildenhall in Suffolk, probably best known for its RAF/USAF base, but a castle? I don't know.

Maybe Suffolk County Council could help? http://www.suffolkcc.gov.uk

Philip DavisAccording to my database there is a motte and bailey castle at Milden in Suffolk (The site is known as Foxburrow Hill) but there is little known history for this site. Milden is some way from Mildenhall. I have no record of a medieval castle at Mildenhall but this doesn't exclude the possibility of the manor house being called a castle, despite being unfortified, or, more likely, a 18th or 19th century grand house being called a castle during one of the periodic fashionable revivals of the medieval period style(s). Locating a house called Mildenhall castle may be quite difficult without a personal trip to the records held in Suffolk county library.

There is also a Mildenhall in Wiltshire. This is a village just outside the town of Marlborough. Marlborough had a famous royal castle, the earthworks of which still exist in the grounds of the famous public school (British public schools are private institutions not run by the state). I don't think that is possible that this medieval castle was every called Mildenhall. There is a possibility of a later grand house in the village of Mildenhall being called castle but again this would need research at the Wiltshire county library.

Sorry I can't be of more help but since both Suffolk and Wiltshire are beautiful places it might be worth considering a trip.

wurdsmiffPoint of order, British does not mean English, Public schools in Scotland are just that, and fee-paying schools are Private.
