------------------ ------------------ Gordon. [This message has been edited by wurdsmiff (edited 12-03-2000).]Lost Lisa I am looking for information on Balnagowan Castle. I would like to find a picture for a Geneaology Project I am putting together for a family Christmas present. I found lots of info, but no pics. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Even if pics are not available I would love to hear from anyone with info as well!
Thanks!
LisaPeter Balnagown .. quite an impressive pile. Only picture (and a small one) I can find up to now is in Mike Salter's (again), 'The Castles of Western & Northern Scotland. According to Mike a lot of work was carried out there between 1818 and 1841. Started by Sir Charles Lockhart.
Once again, more info, just ask. Ciaowurdsmiff Adapted from Martin Coventry, Castles of Scotland 2nd ed.
Balnagown stands 8 miles north east of Alness, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland. It consists of a much altered tower house dating in part from the 14th century. the old part is a tall gabled block of 4 storeys and a garret with 2 slender corner towers.
These towers are probably later additions, and one gable is dated 1672. The place was much extended and mansionised by the famed architect James Gillespie Graham (amongst others) in the 18th and 19th centuries. The windows have been enlarged.
The original castle was built by the Ross family in 1375. The 8th laird was imprisoned in Tantallon Castle for terrorising his neighbours, he died in 1592. His son George held a John Ross at Balnagown after seizing him in Edinburgh, and was accused in several murders, and in aiding the fugitive Earl of Bothwell, 3rd husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Georges sister Katherine wife to Munro of Foulis, was accused of witchcraft, though despite her co-accused being burnt, she escaped by getting her own people onto her jury. The Ross family retained possession until 1978. The house is reputed to be home to numerous ghosts-but aren't they all!
