The castle location website
www.castleuk.netPeter The name is part of the same group as;
Berry Pomeroy. nr. Torquay, devon.
Most likely started in the 12th C. And later enlarged. A new (!) tudor mansion sits within ruins of the old site.Peter Pumphrey:
The exact spelling of this name is found as far back as the 1670's, and all are centered around Tewksbury.
Pomfrey, whilst also a corruption of the above name is also found quite strongly in its own right in the southern counties, Surrey, Sussex etc.
Another spelling, more like the first appears in Warrington in the early 1800's, and becomes quite strong in the area. Many of the first spelling not found in Tewsbury, can be traced back to that area, were they were no doubt christened.william a dobson Pontefract was formerly known as Pomfret not Pomfrey
