Does any one know where i can find good pictures of Wemyss Castle. I self only found those on homepages.tesco.net/ ~fcp/wcas02.htm thx in advance ------------------ Both sets of castles are built near caves, which is what the name comes from, although Wemyss Castle in Ayrshire (near Largs) was also built by a chap called Wemyss too. There are lots of pictures of Wemyss Castle Ayrshire in hardcopy books as its something of a stately home. Levan And when a while ago i was reading in this book: i saw a little picture of wemyss castles and so i became curious for more pictures of this castle between kirkcaldy and buckhaven. There's hardly anything left of Wemyss Castle in Ayrshire - my comments about the stately home were in reference to the castle in Fife, built in the fourteenth century on the site of a castle destroyed by Edward I (of England). Much of what we see now is the sixteenth century extension built by Sir John Wemyss so that he could host his royal friends. Wemyss Castle is most famous as the venue where Mary Queen of Scots was reputed to have met her future husband, Henry Lord Darnley. There are a couple of truely delightful pictures of this castle in the book, "Ancestral Castles of Scotland", by Hugh Cantile, photos by Sampson Lloyd. ISBN 1-85585-118-0. The book also includes an old representation of Wemyss from the sea. Levan i bought it in stirling castle, some years agoipflo Hello Gordon There's a few pics on SCRAN. The URL for each is enormous, so here's the start point. Do a search for Wemyss Castle, and you'll get right there, Wemyss itself gives you a bit of plodding through 400+ results.

Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page Levan Had you realised that there is more than one Wemyss Castle? In addition to the well know Wemyss Castle in Ayrshire, which is very much a later manor house built around the core of an original much older castle; there are castles at West Wemyss and East Wemyss in Fife. ipflo No, i had not realised there were more wemyss castles, i could have known because i have the beautiful book 'the castles of scotland' of martin coventry. Levan Actually, just realised, my fingers must have been working out of sync with my brain - something like that anyway. Gordon Which edition of Castles of Scotland do you have Ipflo? ipflo the second edition 1997 Gordon Try and get a hold of the 3rd edition, it's much improved on the second, has more real castles, and additionally includes a lot of interesting mansions often mistaken as castles.
