BarktonI am looking for any info and or pics of Odell Castle in Odell, Bedfordshire, England. I am descended from one of the original owners. The only info I have on it is from a book my great-grandmother wrote before I was born.

Jenni

AJRI have put in the Photo Archive, which can be accessed towards the bottom of this page, a copy of an old postcard of Odell Castle, postmark between 1900 and 1909 - the last figure is smudged.

The only info I have to hand is as follows.

On the Ouse near Bedford, the castle, also known as Woodhill, belonged to the barons de Wahul. A new house was built from its stones in the reign of Henry VIII.

From “Discovering Castles in England & Wales” by John Kinross, 1973.

castleukHi Jenni
I visited Odell last year to find the castle, its a lovely village, with a good pub down by the river. I had trouble finding the castle (looking in the wrong place for one) on the way out we climbed a small hill, passing the church, when we spotted some herringbone wall not old but new, which is unusual (my spotter is very good at this, after years visiting mounds of muck and bits of stone and being very bored). Looking round i found the sign that gave the site away PRIVATE PROPERTY KEEP OUT.
Below is a links to the castle and it's 2 pictures. http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_midlands/153/odellcastle.htm http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_midlands/153/odellcastlepicture1.htm http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_midlands/153/odellcastlepicture2.htm
Can anyone give me a date on the 2 buildings in the pictures and Jenni what info do you have on the site?
Yours Chris
