I would like to know more about the castle site Varrig, in Tongue, Sutherland. The history will most helpful and any history of the surrounding area. I`ve been to Tongue and it is a beautiful place. I only spent a short time there and wasn`t able to find the information regarding that beautiful place. I`m male, 32, living in London. If there is a Religous theme to the area in its history then that will be of more interest. I was baptised Catholic and have ecumenical fervour. Any information regarding religious sites around Tongue would be good. Thank you. Regards Brian. ------------------Raven2
Dear sir, madam,Gordon Caisteal Bharraich {castle varrich} is a ruined two storey tower house of the Bishops of Caithness. According to Mike Salter, the Bishops used it as a half way house on their travels between Balnakeil House and Scrabster Castle. It probably dates from the 16thc. http://www.caledoniancastles.co.uk/castles/highlands/varrich.htm http://www.scotland-index.co.uk/sutherland/Tongue/in_tongue.htm#cas http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/areatong/
