Quix Hello all,
Help needed here, I am doing some research into Chillingham Castle, Northumberland for a book I intend to write.
I am mainly interested in anything to do with John Sage, also known as Drag Foot.
He was a notorious torturer at Chillingham in the 1200's and tortured many a Scot in the border wars.
There are many interesting stories about him including his relationship with Elisabeth, the daughter of one of the Border Reivers. This led to his downfall, as he accidentaly killed her (strangualtion in a fit of passion, whilst I may add, he had her tied up to the rack) The king had no alternative but to have him hanged.
If you know anything at all of John Sage... or would be interested in finding out more, please do contact me.

Gordon No mention of John Sage, but there's plenty of detail on the castle in John Dodd's bastions & Beligerants. You will find details in the 'Book Nook' forum. Sorry, there is just far too much too repeat here.

AJR I would agree with Gordon. If we tried to report all details on Chillingham Castle here, it would take up a great deal of time and space. In addition to the book Gordon Mentioned, also listed in the Book Nook are "The Castles & Tower Houses of Northumberland" by Mike Salter (which includes a floorplan of the castle) and "Medieval Castles, Towers, Peles & Bastles of Northumberland" by T.H. Rowland. You should be able to find these easily, or by using the "Search" facility.
As for additional information on the castle, you may wish to enquire on the castle website, http://www.chillingham-castle.com/

Northumbria I have been to Chillingham Castle a few times and am I Night Owl. There was something on Night Owls last night, they were live at Chillingham Castle. Here are a few things I've learnt from my visits and Alan Robson!
1) The King ordered John Sage to release the Scots from Chillingham on a Thursday. John said that her would release them, but on the Saturday. Between the Thrusday and the Saturday, he went to many of the villages situated around the castle, and come Saturday, thousands of villages were waiting on the Devils Mile(The road leading up to the Castle).
Out of the hundered or so of men, women and children that were released, not one survived the walk (run) to the gate. They were all killed. The bodies were never moved and people walked over tham and drove their carts over them.
To this day, from the pot holes in the now tarmacked raod, bones still seem to creep up, not wanting to be forgotten.
A finger bone was found last week on the road.
