Dantheorca Does anyone know anything about the Motte and Bailey of Gosport in Hampshire in the UK. I'm doing a archaeology project on it and need any information anyone has on it.

AJR I used to live in Stubbington, and must admit to not knowing anything at all about a motte and bailey in Gosport. I'll search in my library at home and get back to you.

Peter Quick look in Arthur Mee's Hampshire says
'Where Nicholsons yard stands on the beach was once an old fort where the Parliamentry guns were planted to bombard Portsmouth in 1642. Also a chain at Blockhouse Ponit across to Portsmouth.

AJR The only information I have on anything at Gosport, other than the later forts, is a reference to a motte and bailey at Alverstoke - but no historical detail.

Maybe you'll be able to tell us more, so that we can have the information for future use.
A Knight The only reference of any detail I can find is in - The Portsmouth Papers 30 - The Western Defences of Portsmouth Harbour 1400 - 1800 - G H Williams - 1979. This shows a map of the Motte and Bailey based on the 1/1250 Ordnance Survey map and a brief description.
D C Cathcart King only records it as a possible motte.
