------------------ [This message has been edited by Paul (edited 06-01-2005).] It is very difficult to find information about Bothwell Mansion. In addition to what Paul has said, I can say: The demolition was in 1926. On http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townhistory4703.html we can find a very small description: Modern Bothwell Castle, to the E of its ruined predecessor, is a plain Queen Anne edifice, consisting of a centre and two wings; Visitation of Seats by J Burke (1853) Both these books contain some info about Bothwell Castle. ipflo ------------------ I have also a question: If you find more information on new Bothwell Castle other than this, could you please post it here. I am also very interested in it and very curious how the house looked likeEdinburgh08 I am doing a study on the design of Bothwell Castle. I am looking for any information concerning a mansion built just to the east of the castle. I know that the mansion was demolished sometime around 1930 due to mining contamination of some kind. If you have any information please get back to me.
ThanksPaul Bothwell House was built by Archibald Douglas, the 1st earl of Forfar (1653 - 1712)
The house proved more comfortable than the old castle so that by 1700 the earls had
moved from the castle to the house.
Due to 100's of years of coal mining in the area, subsidence caused the house to become unsafe and it was demolished in the 1920's.
Regards Paul of Paul's castle. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/castles/ ipflo Hi,
