Please help me were castles comfortable?? if not why???
ThanxMerlin They usualy were not. At least in winter it was very difficult to heat any rooms larger than a simple chamber, because open fires are not much good to give a constant stream of warm air 24h/day. To keep the warmth inside, windows had to be very small and therefor the rooms had not much daylight and the air was sticky. And we don't need to discuss the hygienic level of a 12th century household: It was very, very bad. But life in most castles was still more comfortable then in most other houses and also more secure.
