deborahknowles No, I don't actually want to torture someone although my husband volunteered! What I need to find out is what tortures, if any, were used in the early 1300's. Most of the stuff I have read is in Tudor times. I am thinking political prisoner, to extract confession of wrongdoing etc. Any help would be most gratefully received!

LadyCasey I may be mistaken, for this is not something I know much about, but I beleive they mostly did public displays, where they often burned, beat, threw stuff at, and then often hung or beheaded the culprit. For those that did not have a public audience there were the famous devices used to stretch the person and some were even whipped.
Now I may be a thousand years off on this so don't take this as an absoulute answer to your questions, I'm sure others will post and I will learn from them as well!!
Merlin After the german king Albrecht I. von Habsburg was murdered at may 1st, 1308 near Brugg (Switzerland), the mighty house of Habsburg hunted down the killers, destroyed their castles and towns. Most of the group of knights was caught within two years and the sourcetexts of that time tell as what happend to Rudolf von Wart, wihch was one of them. He was bound nearly naked on a horsetail and draged to the place of execution. To torture him further, his arms and legs were broken and twisted between the spokes of a wheel which was attached to the top of a pole. There he was left to die in public display.
Another very common torture in that time was called 'Gottesurteil' (god's decision). If it was not clear if someone was guilty of a crime like murder, he was forced to put his naked hand into a pot of boiling water. If the hand heald within a certain amount of time, he was left free. If not, he was considered to be guilty.
