auachmann Approx. how many Riders ( knights ) were sent as escorts for important messages? i.e. Ransom demands or similar. Were they allowed to take overnight or other breaks on their trips? Peter I should think the norm was just one.
And as to stops or breaks. It would depend on the urgency of the mission. If it was any distance they would of course change horses. This would give the courier time to freshen up and perpare for the next leg of the trip.
And unless it was to do with the King, or sent by the King it certainly would not be a Knight. Much to important person too risk.
Three good questions in a row.Merlin I once did a report on diplomatic missions in carolingian times (8th to 10th century). The king normaly sent a bishop and/or a count to places like Jerusalem, Baghdad, Constantinopolis or even to England or Denmark. Their escort was only a few servants and of course they had to take breaks - their trips were during from several months up to two years! Wherever possible, they travelled by ship (over the sea or on rivers like the Rhine or the Donau). The roads in these days were very bad and dangerous.
