[This message has been edited by Maria (edited 07-19-2004).]auachmann Hello again,
Who dealt with sick people? ( Diseases ) Injured people? ( Accidents at castle, in the field, at combat,Jousts, etc.)
Did they have doctors? Was it the Barber? A monk? The lady of the house for first Aid? I cannot find anything to address this subject and there must have been lots of it.
Thanks for any ideas.Maria I'll tell you what I know. The lady mended the lords wounds when he came back from battles.
They had doctors, I think they were members of the Barbers and surgeons guild. Because, at first, the barber also used to drain blood(this was somenthing like an universal cure, everything you had, they took blood, because this led the bad blood out) When drastic measured were neaded, they did surgery, cutting legs off and stuff. Anesthesia was done with a hammer. As they thought blood didn't go round the body, surgery was a bit messy.
Illness was cured with potions, amulets, mainly based on superstition. Three spiders around your neck to cure fever. Mummy dust was pretty popular (I've seen it at our Chemistry museum). A medicine had to be exotic and expensive.
Sometimes, when the nobleman did not trust the doctor, he called an old woman from the village, which usually had more common sense. She used boiled plants, herbs.Merlin Not to forget the monks. The abbeys gathered a lot of knowledge over the centuries, and medicine and healing was one of them.
