Maria Coul a king adopt a child?(or maybe not a child... a young man, or an older one). I know this happened in the Roman Empire (Nerva adopted Trajan as his succesor). Merlin And so did Cesar with Octavian. But in the northern kingdoms of german/anglo-saxon tradition the (male) bloodline was much more important than in Old Rome. There is a theory about an adopted prince in late merovingian France - I'll try to find out the name. Merlin That's him: Childebertus Adoptivus, king of Austrasia until 662 A.D. There's a large article about him in german Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childebertus_adoptivus Levan In most european countries, unlike the Roman empire, any adopted child would certainly be surplanted by "bloodline" heirs to the throne - even distant relatives in many cases would have a greater claim to the throne.
