The location for a trial would in most cases be an open place in a village or town. It could also be the court of a castle.

A trial was held in the great hall of Castle Levan. Lady Marion Montgomery, wife of the owner of the castle was tried by Mary of Guise (mother of Mary Queen of Scotts) and found guilty of torturing and murdering her tennants. She was sentanced to death at the trial, however, this was later commuted to house arrest. When Marion's husband returned from armed service he was so ashamed of her behaviour that he starved her to death.

It wasn't unusual for many trials to take place in castles, where the laird acted as a constable (or steward) on behalf of the crown. Most cases were petty, although the punishments available were pretty severe by modern standards.
