Hello, My name is Narrelle ,I live in Australia, and will soon be visiting the UK,Ireland,France. Does anyone know of a Castle offering accommodation ,without all of our modern day luxuries,As I would really like to feel as though I have stepped back in time. Also any castles offering what we call a theatre resturaunt, where costumes are supplied and you dress up and participate in the theme of the evening ??? Any info would be greatly welcomed, Thanks Narrelle. |

Hi Narrelle, not too sure about a castle without the trimmings. Sad to say, that is what most tourists want. Also the theatre aspect is not something I think you'll find. Nearest you will get is a 'Medieval Banquet', of which there are many dotted about the U.K. Some of them do give you the option of 'dressing up'. You may find something in back-postings. You could always hire something of the Landmark Trust. These do renovated places from cottages to castles. So you could cook what you wanted & dress as you wanted. It isn't cheap. But you can hire them for a weekend, or a mon to fri break (which is cheaper). But all these places do get booked up very fast at popular times of the year. Peckforton Castle, in Cheshire (not too far from me). Is a 'modern' castle' (almost 200 years old), but built like a real castle. One of the Robin Hood films was done there. This has banquets (as does Ruthin Castle Hotel), but also has medieval weekends. Best of luck. |

Hi Peter, Thanks for your reply,I think it's sad that tourist demand has turned the interior of these majestic old buildings into a hotel style settings,it's a real sign of modern day society when we can't go without our TV or ensuites for a night!!I don't think dressing up and hanging out by myself would be much fun and my husband would definatly think I had gone crazy!!! I thought I might email a few of the castles with accommodation and see if they had any unrestored rooms available. At the theatre resturaunt we have in Melbourne it is always a funny nights entertainment, you can book a big old wooden table with pews, the guest of honour is made king and queen complete with crowns and robes, the guests are served with big jionts of meat just slapped on your plate with bioled potatoes and heaps of alchohol, medievil music and dancing and if you are really badly behaved you get locked in a dungeon on display!! bye for now Narrelle. |

Hm! That perhaps wouldn't go down to well in most of the places in the U.K. And some of the 'real' dungeons I wouldn't want to spend even 5-mins in ! Mind ... you could always try not paying the bill and see where that got you. | |
