We are working on plans for our castle. The structure is 34' by 32', with two 12' x 12' turrets. We plan on building with 8'" block, then facing with river rock. The shed roof and upper level walls will be logs. We are trying to determine the size of footings needed for the turrets. Thanks! vk

Sounds great.
I'm not speaking from experience here, but I would guess the footing size would depend on local building codes, soil type and the height(weight) of the turrets.
Personally I would draw up plans of the structure and take them to an engineer or architect to advise you on footings. The plans would not need to be to convention, just show the material used and cross sectional structure of the walls, the dimentions of the whole structure, the roof construction and the placement of windows and doors.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

You say the upper level will be of logs. Is that log cabin style? Are you wanting it to look period? I don't recall any reference to log cabin style building methods in period. You would be better off using timber framing methods and infill with either stone, brick, wattle and daub or timber planking.
There's a thread on Timber framed castles in the 'Building your own castle' forum.

If you have any more questions just ask.

Dont know how tall the walls are but as for the footing We are in the building of our turret at this time. 16ft by 16 ft. by 34 ft. tall, After a lot of study and talking to builders and a lot of great people on the list. We came up with a footing of 4ft.deep by 3ft. wide, sounds like a lot but our first 12ft the walls are 3ft. thick. Hope this helps!
