Topic: castel on hill surrounded by water (ocean)

while living in germany when my husband was in the military i had the great oppurnity to visit probably over 100 castles. while there i saw a photo of a castle on a hill that was surrounded by water. i think it was the ocean. it was so awesome. when i asked where it was i thought they said Ireland, or England. it has been many years. but now that i have access to find it i cant remember. does anyone know what castle this may be. i want to go there to visit it someday. thanks for your help |

You will appreciate that your description could cover a great many castles on these isles. There are many castles which are both well photographed and on hilly islands.
The most likely I would suggest would be St Michael's Mount in Cornwall England. The link below will lead to previous replies on this site. If this is not the one, I suggest you click on castle collections at the foot of the page and browse - though I'm sure other suggestions will follow.

Saint Micheal's Mount would also be my first thought but some other possibilities are:
Tintagel in Cornwall http://www.mantra2000.com/castles/tintagel.html

Lundy Isle off Devon

Hurst in Hampshire http://WWW.HANTS.GOV.UK/leisure/navdef/hurstcas/ But this is only the english possibilities and there are other possibilities. (Also remember that England is not the same as Britain)

Other impressive castles on hills/cliffs next to the sea include:Bamburgh and Dunstanborough in Northumbria
Scarborough in Yorkshire
Pendennis and St Mawes in Cornwall
Dunnattar and Tantallon in Scotland While not in the UK or Eire, Fort la Latte in Brittany could also fit the description. |

If you also wish to consider Scottish sites, try Eilan Donan and Castle Stalher, both built upon small islets, though not of any great height.
