On a recent trip through Northern Wales, heading west on A55, we spotted the remains of a castle cut into the hillside. We got off to look at a Town called Llanddulas. The castle looks down on a golfcourse that I think is in Abergele, and on Colwyn Bay. The castle is posted with keep out signs and all the entrances are blocked up. It is literally stepped into the side of the hill. It looks like there was a fire and the roofs and floors are collapsing in on themselves. If anybody knows the name or has any information about the history and ownership of this castle, could you please post it? I have found out that the name of the castle is Gwrych and it was built by Hesketh.[This message has been edited by Advbuild (edited 07-01-2000).] |

I've records for two medieval castles in this area; Abergele and Cawr, both are earthwork castles, Abergele is in the town and is virtually obliterated, Cawr is somewhat away from the A55 and is a motte and bailey. Neither fit the discription of the building you discribe. This means it is a stone medieval castles of which I have no record in which case I'd a) be very suprised and b) like as much information as possible about this or it is not a medieval castle. I'm inclinded to think that this is a post 1600 building.------------------ And as I rode by Dalton-Hall Beneath the turrets high, A maiden on the castle-wall Was singing merrily: The Outlaw by Sir Walter Scott http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/index.html | |
