As a child I lived at Manor Farm, Ilketshall St. John near Bungay in Suffolk. Behind our house in the wood was what we called "the mound", properly, I believe, called The Mount. We were told it had been built as an aid to bombarding Mettingham Castle but I suspect this may not be correct. Can anyone tell me more?
Thanks.

Not to sure on this one, it could be a siege castle. Have a few contacts down that neck of the woods. Will drop them a line for you if you don't get any more info.

The site is listed,as The Mount, in Castellarium Anglicanum by D. J. Cathcart King, the most comprehensive work on English castle, but I don't recall him giving much information beyond it being a motte with wet ditches. Lots of castle sites exist with no recorded history but if this site does have some the place to find out would be the Suffolk Sites and Monument Record; Tel 01284 352445. If you do find out some more information perhaps you could let us know what it was here at Castle Quest.
