Topic: Castles on Cliff Faces

Hi, I am currently trying like mad to find a castle somewhere in Devon or Cornwall for a weekend break. I need the castle to be haunted, on a cliff face with crashing waves, very old and creepy and fairly desolate. I have been reading about Camelot Castle in Cornwall and this sounds great, but doesn't look to old and their website doesn't provide the age or if it's haunted or not. I wondered if anyone had stayed there? But I am very open to other suggestions even if their not in my preferred locations, but somewhere in the UK. Hopefully I'll be spending the weekend around February and hopefully there will be hail and storms to add to the ambiance!! All help greatly appreciated. ------------------

Hi, Jose.There are several castles in Scotland located upon cliff-tops - however, I'm not sure about ones where you can stay. For the most magnificent imaginable cliff-top location, Dunnottar, Stonehaven (near Aberdeen) takes some beating - it's on a coastal stack, so it's totally surrounded by cliffs.

Scotland can also be relied upon during February (and most other times of year, for that matter) to produce sufficiently 'atmospheric' weather!

Thanks very much, I may not be able to stay in those castles but the locations, on top of those cliffs! the views must be breathtaking and well worth a visit. I will definately look into visiting in the New Year. Thanks again

Josie,
as you are going to be struggling to find a place that meets your needs. Have you tried, or heard of 'the Landmark Trust' ? They renovate old buildings then hire them out. They do have several castles,and,if I recall a fort. Without looking I know it is down south. This is not on a cliff but on a rock, and when the tide comes in, you stay in !

Tantallon Castle is another good cliff top castle in Scotland, but if it is Cornwall you are interested in then I suggest you look at Tintagel Castle. This has a fantastic cliff top situation on the wild north Cornish coast. Its ruins cling to the rugged cliffs in a most dramatic way.It is looked after by English Heritage and because of its exposed situation you would need to check if it was open before visiting. The steps can be dangerously slippy in bad weather. Have fun!

Hi Josie, you can't stay at Tintagel but you can stay at Chillingham castle in Northumberland. It is atmospheric, VERY haunted but not on a cliff. Near to it, however is Dunstanburgh Castle which is right on the coast and breathtakingly beautiful. There is also Warkworth on the coast and of course Lindisfarne, surrounded by the sea! Anyone who loves castles should go to Northumberland- there are loads. Good luck finding your perfect castle retreat.Deborah ------------------

Thanks Deborah, I will keep those in mind for future reference. We have found a castle not as old I would have liked in Tintagel, it's called Camelot Castle and it is on a cliff face. We will be staying there in February for a weekend and have been told we may be the only occupants except for the ghosts! I will post my findings. Thanks again.Josie |
