I went to visit the beautiful village of Chilham at the weekend, and, according to my book (okay, it was written in the 1980s), it stated that the castle was open to visitors.

However, it appears that about 4 years ago, the "friendly" owner died, and the place was sold - see
http://www.digiserve.com/peter/chilham.htm

I spoke to a number of villagers, and found that the castle now belongs to a very private Greek named Mr. Petrou (if that's how you spell it). Although he lives in the modern mansion, he also owns the old Norman Keep, which is sublet to a Scandinavian. Access to photograph either of the properties was denied, and there is substantial security in place at all possible entrances to Chilham Castle. One person I spoke to said they can see the old Keep from their bedroom window - but only in the winter when all the leaves have fallen from the trees. They suggested I return later in the year if I still wanted a photograph.

Anyhow, the trip was not entirely wasted, as the local pub opposite the castle does a lovely cream tea with homemade scones. The church is also worth a visit.

It's always a bit sad to discover that a castle has been closed to the public. The plus side is that it is still occupied and so presumably being maintained.
