Hi Trukr
Houghton le Spring is south-west of Sunderland on the A690 road to Durham.
The rectory had a tower built without licence in 1483, a pardon was granted by Bishop Dudley. The tower has now vanished, site unknown.

A little about Houghton le Spring history can be found towards the bottom of the page at
http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/Chester-le-StreetandWashington.htm

Unfortunately it doesn't mention the tower or castle.

Pictures of various buildings in the town can be found at
http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/Public/Editable/Themes/Local-Heritage/listedbuildings/Details/Ho_Wash/houghto.htm

Again - no tower or castle, but it gives you an idea of the area.

There is a 'Haughton' near Humshaugh in Northumberland ?
This is a mixture of tower-house & 19th Cen tury mansion.
