Hello...I'm searching for any information regarding our ancestral castle. The spelling of our name was changed during imigration in the early 1900's to Vistein. My father who is now in his mid-80's,believes the castle name in czech was spelled Vystejn or Vystein.I would really appreciate any type of assisstance in my search....thank you....

Hi czech,
no, not found anything as yet (though knowing my luck someone will find it whilst I'm typing this).
it is just the way your name is spelt.
The ending doesn't seem to be czech (though I don't know the language).
I've just looked in the index to a book I have .. Ceskoslovenska Historicka Mesta.
And there are no endings like that !
More of an Austrian sound.
Will have another look.

I have found a castle named Valdštejn near Turnov. You can find it on:
http://www.zamky-hrady.cz/2/valdstejn-e.htm

Is it the one you are looking for?

On the Web-site about the castle Valdštejn
(Hrad Valdštejn) on http://www.cesky-raj.cz/ceskyraj/valdstejn.htm I have found some info about the history and owners of this castle:

If you speak the language, you will understand it yourself better. But, since I speak Russian, which is much like Czeck, I will translate what I understand:

It is a castle on sand blocks on a rocky place near Turnov. The castle was build in the second half of the 13.century. In 15.century it was owned by lord z Vartemberk (must be 'von Wartemberg' or something). In 1436 it was taken by the capten of Husits Jan Čapek ze Sán. In 1621 it became property of Albrecht z Valdštejna (von Waldstein) and remained theirs until 1821. The Baroque chapel of St.John was build in 1772. In 1821 the castle was bought by Jan Lexa z Aehrenthalu. Since 1945 it is owned by the state.

Katharina....thank you so much for your time and help.I wish I could be more sure about the exact spelling of the castle.I've been to this particular sight and have even considered the Valdstejn castle but my father sais no....it's spelled different.Soon,I'll be getting more info from other family members and perhaps that will assist in my search.I'm pretty sure in the czech language, the name Vistein means...vision stone or velvet stone.Maybe that can help in some way...Thank you very much....czech...

Hello Czech,
Went through some old links in my favorite list and came up with a Castle Vichtenstein. This castle is however situated in Austria but no more then some 30 miles from the border with the Czech Rep. It's also situated near a river; the Danube to be precise. Seems to me to be a good candidate for your castle.
There's a picture and some (very little) info at: http://www.aeiou.at/aeiou.encyclop.v/v397849.htm

"But round about the castle there began to grow a hedge of thorns, which every year became higher...."

A very famous person in Czech history was one Albrecht Valdstejna. And I believe there are several castles and palaces in there somewhere.
