do you know something more on the history of the box, who the creator is and so? Are there more pictures on the box, on the sides?i am afraid it could be anywhwere: northern france, middle europe, british isles or maybe it is just a fantasy castle, painters often did that. |

Cadzow is one possibliity. It's difficult to be certain, it's more that stretch of River Avon I recognize, the wee angler in the bottom right could be me, that's a fave spot for Grayling. Cadzow of course is much ruinous now, having been partly dismantled in 1579, but with a little artistic license may have appeared very like your picture at of 1830....but then, so could many another. The foot bridge is a bit more modern now. Another likely candidate is Cathcart, again the location is very similar, but more contemporary pics show a garret, see the plans in the photo archive. Having said that, I've seen early representations of Cathcart without the garret... ? Some renovation work in the 19thc before McGibbon & Ross got there. It's also very like Calderwood in East Kilbride, though this collapsed into the Gorge in 1753, or Crossbasket, which was extended into a mansion later in the 19thc with a new garret added. Corehouse is also in a similar location, though is a different type of structure. I'd go for Cadzow with a little license, or slightly less likely, Crossbasket.------------------ 'Demeure par la verite' Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page

Thanks everbody for the help, i got this reply. Chris Thank you so much for the information on the castle picture. It is so exciting that Cadzow Castle ties up with our research. I did not give you all our theories in case I prejudiced the suggestions. We thought the picture was painted by Horatio McCulloch. This is correct both with the age of the box and the location. We will do a web feature on this box and we would like to give you and Gordon credit for your help. Thank you again. Great great help. Yours Joseph and Antigone
