The Romans had a fort here, and in the 11th C Robert Curthose, son of William the Conqueror was instructed to build a castle. He used the old Roman site to construct a motte and bailey castle to guard the lowest crossing point of the Tyne, which at that time represented the border with Scotland. The castle was developed in stone in the 12thc, the keep costing an inordinate £911. Over the years it was expanded, modernised and developed. In the 19thc much rubble and stone were cleared from the site to provide space for, amongst other things a new courthouse. At this time the keep was deteriorating, and was re-roofed. It along with some scant portions of the curtain wall and the south postern remain. You can see a Lego representation of the keep at http://www.end.com/~jynx/castle/ and the real thing @ www.graeme-peacock.com/ d_photographs/d-05.htm------------------ 'Demeure par la verite' Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page

If you can get a hold of Bastions and Belligerants, by John F Dodds (see book nook) you'll get a whole lot more. His entry for Newcastle is pretty thorough.------------------ 'Demeure par la verite' Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page
