This is about mediterranean castles buit by the crusaders.
When you say castle, do you mean medieval castles? Because in Creta there are the ruins of ancient greek castles, with the labirinth of the Minotaurus. My history teacher claims they were pretty advanced, had flush toilets and things of thet kind. It is also said that the legend of Atlantis has it's origins somewhere here.
Do you talk about castles on the shore or castles in the mediterranean region?

As Maria has correctly stated .. that is one heck of an area.
Where do you want?
You have an excellent choice, Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, Greece etc. etc.

Robin, as Peter already said - you have to ask more specific. it's not the same to talk about crussaders castles in the east of the Mediterranean, about spanish castles, about castles in the south of France, in Silcily or on the italian, african, greek or the dalmatian coast. They are very different from each other and have a different history and cultural background.

Well, there is a lot of mediterranean Castles. I am from Greece and for 3 years now I am traveling through my country to visit as much as I can, learning about their history and their myths and legends. I am lucky because I have that chance because of my work.

There are a lot of castles here in Greece, much more 100 maybe. Most of them are Medieval. If you search a little through Medieval History you will find the reason.

Here in Greece, came a lot of Knights through Europe. In Pelloponisos were the Latins from Venice, Italy etc that have build a whole "country" of castles.

Also, Rhodos(greek island) was the base of the Order of Knights of St John of Jerusalem, the richest order of Europe after the "great fall" the Templars(Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem). So, in Rhodos they build their city for all their knights. For that reason, nowdays in Rhodos their is a Medieval city inside the walls and the Palace of the Great Magicians(the "head" of the Order).

At Thessaloniki there is also remainings of a big castle. After the fall of Kostantinoupol(nowdays Istanbul) at 1204, from the Crusaders, Thessaloniki was the second capital of the Latin Empire of Konstantinoupol. So, the Latins try to remake the castle.

And the list goes on.. Mystras, Skiathos, Samothraki, Kavala, Platamonas, Kerkyra(Corfu for the West World :-) ), Monemvasia etc has castle of all sizes.
Greece is a country full of castles, thanks to our medieval history when this area was often an area of War.

I hope that I have helped you.
Sorry for my poor English, I hope that you had understood me.

With all respect,
Koumartzis Nikolaos

Nikolaos,
don't worry about your English, it is very good. As my Greek doesn't exist!
Any input on castles from your country would always be interesting.

I personnaly adore the Holy Land and you'll find in those lands several
medieval defensiv works that have been build during and after the crusades.

this link will show you some of them. From Aquaba (Jordania) to Edesse
(Turquie). www.orient-latin.com

For the moment, it's in french, but the pictures are good. There are more
castles on this website every month. Enjoy

All times are PT (US)
