Then I'm not so sure if my answer is yes. There are some castles I definitely would not like to call my home. Such as some lousy cave-castles high up in some wet an dark place in the mountains, with not much light, warmth and space. But there are others...

I would have loved it despite the lice and fleas, disease, early death etc. It would have been the safest place in the event of an attack.

I'd find a better house keeper and fire the one that let the place become that way.
Filth is up to the individual not the fault of the house/shelter that they live in.
Your find the same conditions exist today in modern housing whether its in a slum or a mansion.
I've personally seen both.

I'd live in a castle most definitely. That is, if it was completely surrounded by gardens of flowers of sweet nectar. Not only to symbol my status in wealth and power, but to mask the stench of the unbathed people, heaps of waste and stray livestock lingering just below my bedchamber's window.

Castle life = wtfpwn yo nose... =]

duncan if u knew anything about castles you wouldn't have replyed like that!!! there was lice, disease and early death back then espescially in castles, they were't clean, for christs sake they ate with their fingers, pissed anywhere they wanted, and bathing was "bad for you" I suggest you do research or at least know wtf you're talking about before you post a message!!!

the last isn't entirely true about bathing in the medieval ages.

In the medieval ages there was a very rich bathing culture, as you can see on many pictures. Especially at the end of the medieval ages. It is only from the 16th century on, the time time that protestantism and contrareformation started that the people began to speak about 'bathing is bad for you'. And this 'bad' wasn't really about the bathing itself but about the fact that the 'bathhouses' had become places of 'free love' (you could compare it with the roman thermaeculture). And this wasn't liked by the new 'moralists' like the in the Netherlands famous Johan Cats (who by the way build a manor near The Hague, very famous about its garden, in which our prime minister lives today), and so they started to say 'bathing is bad for you'.
