I read Queen Margot and it spoke about hidden mortal passages in the Louvre. Did they exist? Did noblemans build castles with hidden passages or hidden chambers so they could spy guests or dissapear(I have a vague feeling this is modern vivid imagination at work), or were those just store-rooms? I suppose some castles might have a way of getting out in case of defeat, but how secret exactly was that?

Pretty sure we had something like this in a past posting ?
No, early castles didn't have anything like that. But certainly later castles, fortified houses etc did.

Thanks for you reply.
I've used the search to chech if there was already an answer, but wasn't succesful. May by I'm doing something wrong. Anyway, I did a bit of reseach in my own town and it's said there used to be secret underground passages to link some churches, but nothing inside actual houses. Also, I remember seing at Peles Castle (Romania)a secret entrance from the library, but it wasn't realy secret, I mean... you could tell it was a fake bookstore.
Thanks again and I'll keep searching

Yep, I was doing something wrong. It seams that the search works better if one types the first letter as a capital letter.
