all the 'standard' drawings of medieval times show ladies wearing the hennin, (although one picture I have of Richard III his lady wife is wearing the horned hennin,) but someone has told me that a learned professor on Radio 4 said no one here wore the true hennin, ie pointed hat with floating veils, but only in Burgundy where it was created. Anyone confirm tis? |

As far as I know, the henin is Asian imported. I can't find the book in which I read this right now, but it was written by Jungis Baltrusaitis, and it's called The Fantastic Middle Age.[This message has been edited by Maria (edited 02-07-2005).] |

this one appears really tricky, but if indeed the true hennin was only used abroad and we had the more familiar horned versions, etc. it makes a mockery of what Hollywood have done to our medieval past and also makes a joke of someone saying they 'saw' a hennin at at window in Middleham Castle ... I'm getting a copy of Terry Jones' Medieval Lives any time soon (add it to the pile, you should SEE the books I have to read and still the book from the spirit author goes on!) but if there is anything in there on hennins, I will post it immediately, in case anyone else needs it. |

My students are just about ready to start making their costumes for their Middle Ages unit. How do we pronounce "hennin"? Is it French (hen neen') or is it more (hen' in) or (hen in')? Help!!!

do you know, because I don't speak to people about medieval things, only write them, I can't help with this one but ... having been told they originated in France, I would go with the French pronunciation unless someone has other ideas? |
