My Gram and I are very curious about our Scottish heritage. Her maiden name is Anderson, which we have heard means that we come from Clan Anderson. We also know that Clan MacAndrews is a highland clan. What we are confused about is how closely Anderson and MacAndrews are related. Different name, same clan? Or cousin clans? Or no relation at all?bnelle |

Both names mean son of Andrew, as does the less common and more anciently used Fitzandrew. The Anderson form is first recorded in 1296 as fitzandrew, david le fiz Andrew having been one of the Scots lords who swore fealty to Edward 1 of England at Berwick. Henry Androsoun is recorded as commisioner for Parliament for coupar Fife in 1585 and so on. However it is also recorded that the the MacIllandrus clan of Islay anglicized their name to Anderson.
There is a sept of Clan Chattan who go by the name of MacAndrew, who had lands at Petty. ------------------
