Does the name Richardson's mean anything and is there a symbol for it? The family possibly came over here at least 4+ generations ago. Richard was a common enough name, so there's obviously going to be a few places where the name sprang up. There are a few early mentions of the surname in Lanarkshire, Thome filius Ricardi having a grant of lands from Robert 1 at Symundestone (?Symington) 1315 to 1321. There is also a Laurence filius Ricardi who was a tenant of the Earl of Douglas at Louchurde in 1376. The only certain thing is that it is from Scotland, or, Northern England. Here son was added on to the end ie: Richardson. But the Welsh just stuck an 's' on. hence we would have ... Richards. The French used 'Fitz', ie Fitz Richard.
