HiI didn't find a castle called DeGraffenreid in Switzerland. But i have found the following castle connected with the Degraffenreids: schloss Worb, it is the birthplace of the founder of New Bern in North Carolina (Christopher DeGraffenreid) according to http://www.ip-services.com/shipman/Shipman/Shipman/Esther/d29761.htm Some info on Christopher Degraffenreid you can find on http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~addams/presidential/graffenried.html Info on Schloss Worb you can find on: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/School_Ruefenacht/frmain6.htm (in german) http://www.burgen.ch/OBJEKTE/worb_2.htm (in german, with good pic) http://www.swisscastles.ch/Bern/worb.html (in french with many good pics) On www.altavista.com you can find babelfish with which you can translate the pages. |

I think the correct original familyname would be De Graffenried (or Von Graffenried). -reid would be absolutely untypical for Switzerland, but it is possible that the ending changed over the centuries if the family lived in the US. At least, this family's history is related to castle Worb, but also to Schloss Gerzensee. The later, a 'castle' built around 1700, was in the possesion of Franz Emanuel Anton von Graffenried (1728-1778). You'll find some informations and pictures of this building at http://www.szgerzensee.ch Familymembers Von Graffenried (the french version DeGraffenried was used equaly because french was very trendy in the 18th century) also owned the castles of Bümpliz http://www.swisscastles.ch/Bern/bumpliz.html and Burgistein http://www.swisscastles.ch/Bern/burgistein.html All four castles are situated in the Canton Bern. |
