Mythology in the medieval period has several aspects. Firstly the mythology varies with geographic region; the mythology of China is considerably different to that of Europe; The mythology of Iceland was Norse and different from the mythology of Spain. Secondly the mythology varies by class; The literate aristocracy had access to classical Greek and Roman mythology not available to illiterate peasants. Thirdly the extent of Christianisation of an area affected the mythology, this varied by time and geography.

However if discussing 12th century England the main mythology was Catholic Christianity, with special weight given to the mercy shown to souls by the Virgin Mary. Amongst the literate classes some Roman and Greek myths still existed (but not to as great an extent as during the renaissance). The Arthurian legends were known but may have been localised to Wales at this period but were rapidly expanding. Amongst the peasantry story telling was a major entertainment but the stories told have generally not been recorded, it is likely that some norse and saxon mythology was still being related but the depth of belief in these gods may have been very slight. Earlier celtic, and preceltic gods, such as Herne the Hunter, may have had a stronger following. Witchcraft was an accepted fact during this period.
