Heya folks. I was just thinking; when is everyone's favorite times for visiting/photographing castles/fortified structures/etc? I like fall and winter the most (especially in the Highlands).Regards, Bluewater |

Sure, photographs can be more spectacular and moody in the autumn and winter periods. However, it's nice, every now and then, to enjoy our castle when it's NOT raining (fewer problems with a leaky roof). Someone suggested to me once, that the main difference between the seasons in Scotland is the relative angle and force of the wind driving the rain. More seriously, in my view, the very best time to visit any castle is when the sun shines just after a storm - the sky is black, golden stone-work and dark slate roofs glisten in the sun, and the adjacent waterfalls are roaring. I'd better stop before I start waxing lyrical! Levan

I'm never to concerned by the weather, but I perfer sites when they are quiet (being an unsocialable person) so winter and early spring are very good for me, if there are no school visits. June is good. Long days, still very few holidaymakers and the only kids around are those sneaking a fag after their exams (they tend to be quiet) |

Because many of the castles in my area lie on private land, and the view obstructed by trees, winter offers a glimpse of many not normally seen from public areas. However since I like wandering around inside and having a good look about, it really doesn't matter what time of year I visit those which are accessible, though driving is much more pleasant in summer. All seasons have their own advantages.------------------ 'Give me the groves that lofty brave, The storms, by Castle Gordon'. I normaly visit castles/ruins with my bike, so frosty winter days are not very much preferred. My personal castle-season is fall, especially for seldom visited castles that one must search in the woods. It can be an almost magical moment, when you first see an old tower between coloured mapple- and oak-leafs.Merlin. | |
