Can anyone tell me any good books in publication or websites that offer information and/or pictures of outdoor gardens or hedgemazes that would usually accompany a castle or stately home? Also, if the creator or administrator of this site see this post, I would like to thank those involved in its creation because I enjoy it a great deal. Thank you in advance for anyone responding.

Probably one of the most famous hedge mazes is that at Hampton Court:

There are lots of pictures of Castle Levan, views across the Firth of Clyde taken from our Ramparts, a few pictures of other nearby castles, plans and elevations, and a few historical notes on the following website:
http://www.castlelevan.com Regarding the 'other half' - a wee Scottish castle like ours costs much the same as a typical 'four-bedroomed detached' in the 'nice' districts of Glasgow and many parts of England; it certainly costs substantially less than such properties in the South of England (although I'll admit that maintenance might be a different matter). I can't comment on property prices in other parts of the world. Suffice to say, if you dream of living in a castle, I think you might find it surprisingly realisable! Regards

Thank you. Yours is a charming home. I apologize if I offended. Being from the States, I had some original misconceptions about the costs of property and castles in your part of the world.

The US dollar is worth apox. half of the UK pound. Inspite of that, property is very afordable. Scotland and Ireland have many castles that can be bought and rebuilt for far less money than it takes to build a new 3 bedroom house in most areas of the states. |
