I would like to find out what areas of
Great Britian have the largest consentration of castles within a day trip from a central location(city). |

Edinburgh and the Lothians has the highest concentation in Scotland, and not just for sites and existing structures, but those open to visitors. Previous advice on joining Friends of Historic Scotland could save you a lot of money, and there are the Stirling , Glasgow and Fife areas within 45 minute drive depending on traffic. In fact if you stay anywhere in the central belt, you could be anywhere in Scotland within a n hour or two excepting the far north.------------------

There is only one 'real' area,and that is the 'Marches' of Wales, Base yourself somewhere like Ludlow (and where better!), and you will be spolit for choice. Just check it out. |

Ludlow is indeed a lovely town in a beautiful area, but the castles in the area tend to be very ruinious. Personally I think this isn't a problem since a visit to Ludlow, Stokesay and Clun would be a very full day. I personally think it's not worth rushing a visit to a castle to try and fit another one in. Do it properly and take your time. There are only two castles, of note, within easy reach of Birmingham, foreinstance, but to try do anything else more than Kenilworth and Warwick in one day would bizzarre. As to density of castle site actually the Vale of Glamorgan has a great density than the Welsh Marches, but Swansea would be choice of town to base myself for a couple of weeks of castle visiting, central to see one of the UK greatest castles at Caerphilly and one of the smallest intact stone castles at Manorbier, plus many others (Carew, Pembroke, Cardiff, Castell Coch &c.)------------------

I managed to visit 63 castles in six days in the Powys / Shropshire / Herefordshire area in the summer, and would agree that many consist of either earthworks or little masonry. Despite many of the sites being on private land, I found the owners most amiable in permitting access and allowing photography. Loved the scenery too, and the walks are exhiliarating. | |
