I need some names of a few castles around the world that are still in use as homes today, such as Windsor Castle. Can anybody help? |

There are hundreds possibly even thousands still inhabited as homes. Castle Levan, Waygateshaw, Traquair, Dowies, Cardross House, Careston, Balbithan House, Balcaskie House, Balfluig Castle, Pitcullo Castle,.....
to name but a few in Scotland.------------------

Each country differs in its utilization of castles. In countries such as Turkey, Jordan, Israel and Spain, castles are rarely used for anything other than diplaying them as an historic building. In Spain the Parador chain of expensive hotels has ruined many castles by "converting" them into hotels. In France and Italy there is more of a tendency to use the better preserved ones to house museums, but rarely as a private dwelling. In Switzerland however, most well preserved castles, if not used to house private or public museums, are used as private dwellings, government offices or owned by trusts, clubs, and the like for other purposes. The situation is similar in Germany.
Here are a few names of real, military castles(as opposed to later manors) that I've come across which are private and inhabited;
Lucens, Erlach, Gorgier, Wildegg, Blonay, Marschlins and Vufflens in Switzerland and Escalona in Spain.
Cuellar in Spain is used as a school campus. Hegi and Ehrenfels in Switzerland and Alburquerque and San Servando in Spain are used as hostels.

My aplogies to Erik.
There are many castles in Italy which are private homes. The area's of Tuscany, Piemonte, Lombardia are good examples. Many are still the centres of wine estates.
In Piemonte you have Monticello,Vigliano, Costigoli d'Asti etc. |

You're correct Peter, I did a quick check of the The Castles of Tuscany web site and there are certainly more castles in Italy used as private homes than I suggested.
I found the number inhabited in Tuscany to run at a little less than 20% though, while some of the rest where used for museums or offices, the majority being uninhabited.
About 10% of those listed, although inhabited, have little or no parts of the castle remaining, the occupants living in villas added to, or built over the top of, the castle.
