Jake Dalton Member	posted 03-13-2001 05:04 PM I'm a game programming hobbyiest (I'll upgrade to proffessional once I make a couple cents ) and I am going to make some castles in a game I am doing. I was wondering what exactly I should do. What time period do the most appealing castles come from (I was thinking renaissance...) and what are the greatest and best features of such times? and what would you say is the most overlooked charcteristic about castles. When i do work i want it to be historically accurate - it makes me feel good . Any babble or endless comments are more than appreciated any response is a good one (unlike every post). ------------------ * :) *
Erik Schmidt Senior Member	posted 03-13-2001 08:33 PM Hi Jake, Well, here comes my babble. In the renaissance they constructed either cannon forts or palaces. One being purely military, the other pure opulence. As for castles, I find those of the 12th to the 14th century most appealing. During this period castles evolved in many forms, but most display a raw beauty which came from its mix of military and domestic functions(the latter being an often overlooked charcteristic). I find things like the complexity of the castle structure, stone Machiolations and the height of the towers great features of this period. Towers(and sometimes walls) were often reduced in height(and often thickened) after large cannon became prevelant in the 15th century. From then on it all went sour for the castle. Erik
Philip Davis unregistered	posted 03-14-2001 12:52 AM In many ways the most appealing castles are those which are rebuilt and extended as time goes on. The Tower of London is one example. This was built in a corner of the Roman walled city and initially used the roman wall The White Tower was built in the 1080's, but the castle was changed and improved many times in a process that still continues (The moat was drained as an improvement and there is now talk of reflooding it). Chepstow castle is another fine example of a castle built over many centuries. Shelly Senior Member	posted 03-14-2001 12:47 PM I'll add my 2 cents worth and say that I like 12th century Norman castles. Dover Castle is a particularly attractive Castle.
