The type of database that you use is largely dependant upon how you wish to use the data.

If you are NOT intending to publish the data online, practically any leading package will do. For example, Microsoft Access will come with a basic template that you can adapt for marketting purposes. A simpler, cheaper and more than likely adequate solution would be to consider Lotus Approach.

If you do intend to publish your database online, you will need to use a database that is SQL compatible so that it can integrate with ASP pages (Active Server). At a rudimentary level MS Access can also be a great start here too. Should your site start to get very popular, it's not difficult to convert Access databases to full scale SQL databases, which are usually either hosted by MSSQL (on Windows servers) or MYSQL (on Unix Servers).
