Hi Wayne, you lucky lad. I don't know about Sweden, but there a many castles in the Lake Garda area. It all depends on how widely you can travel in the area and what your definition of 'best castles' is. The plain south of Lake Garda is full of small castles, almost every town and village has one, although many are badly ruined or private. The mountains north of the lake are also full of castles, and I recommend you head to the nearest tourist office and get the guide "Guida Ai Castelli; Tentino", which covers the castles in that area. There is also a book of the castles in that area, available at Avio castle, but when I was there, not with English text. OK. The best castles I saw were; Verona castle, it's also a beautiful old town with an old bridge, Roman amphitheatre and other Roman ruins. Sirmione castle, on the lake. It was closed for the afternoon when I was there, but it looks great from the outside. Avio. A small castle, but of great interest, located on the edge of the valley on the road north to Trento. Roverto castle, 15th to 16th c., mostly of interest for it's military museum, mostly WWII, but some earlier stuff. Beseno castle at Besenello, large and quite interesting. Castello Del Buonconsiglio is OK if you like the opulent style interiors, not great architecturally. The town has a beautiful main square.Thun castle, I didn't go to see it, but if you like grand houses then this might be for you. There are amny others in the area. So get the guide and go for it. I don't know how you are getting there, but if you happen to be going via Bellinzona(Switzerland) with the train, stop if you can and go see the 3 castles there, Montebello castle is the best of the 3. Have fun, Erik |

Thun-castle, if you're speaking about the city of Thun at the lake with the same name in Switzerland, would be a long way to go from Garda, because it's on the other side of the Alps. And then, it's not a grand house but a very impressive castle from the era of the mighty counts of Kyburg (early 13th century) with an interesting museum inside the big Palas which is crowned by four towers.Or did I get you all wrong, Erik, and there is another Thun in Italy (although the name doesn't sound italian)? |

There sure is another Thun castle, and it just happens to lie near Lake Garda in N Italy. I don't know from where it gets it name, not very Italian, I concur. I have visited the one in Switzerland and agree it is indeed a grand castle, and a long way from Lake Garda.Merlin, since you don't live so far away(ooohhh, if only I lived so close!), I highly recommend you visit the area N of lake Garda, it's packed with so many castles, and the guide makes finding them easy. The youth hostels in both Verona and Trento are great. Stay away from the lake in peak tourist season though, if you can. Erik |

I had plans for a castle-trip to northern Italy for last october, but then had too much work to do. Because I wanted to go on my bike and had only three days time, I decided for the tour Bern-Fribourg-Gruyères-Interlaken instead (with castles and ruins of every kind on the way, such as Grasburg, Arconciel, Gruyères, Wimmis, Unspunnen and many more ...). But I already bought a map and looked for books for northern Italy, so that area will be next! | |
