I'm looking for information on the approx. number of castles that remain in France. The numbers don't have to be exact.....just an estimate or a guess, if you will

This has been asked before, but can't be answered.
It's too complicated. What is your definition of 'remain'? It's almost impossible to figure out a cutoff point between a remaining castle and one lost to history. How many stones or cubic meters of earthworks constitute a remaining castle?
I think we have all pondered this question and all sadly conceded we will never know.
For a very, very approximate number, the historical monument protection body in France might be able to help. Whoever they are.
It's at least many hundreds, possibly thousands. I think Merlin said 2500 known castle sites in Switzerland, but many of these could not really be considered reamining castles.

If a smallish country like Switzerland can have 2,500 (aprx) castles. And the latest figures for Italy (2001)give an estimate of no less than 26,000 !!!!!
I don't think France will be far behind Italy.

Thanks to all for your help!! My definition of "remaining" is a castle that is not completely demolished!! Remember my question though and if you didn't read it closely before try reading it again and read carefully. I didn't ask for exact numbers....I only asked for an estimate. I understand that no one really could possibly know the exact number. You gave me exactly what I asked for and I asked for nothing more!!

The above figures include many castle sites where the castle has in effect been 'completely demolished'. Some of the 2500 sites in Switzerland for example, will include sites where nothing but wall footings remain underground or some remnants of earthworks, so if you visited the site, you could not visually determine that a castle once stood there.
This is why we ask about definitions and saying the numbers are very, very approximate.
