I am very interested in Irish history. Currently, I'm researching Irish castles and tower houses, particularly those built after the arrival of the Normans in 1169 or so. I'm having a hard time finding good sources of information, and wondered if any of you can recommend any publications or sites with details on these Irish fortifications?
Thank you.

Here are some nice sites about Irish castles: http://www.irelandnow.com/castles.html http://www.historic.irishcastles.com/ http://www.castles-of-ireland.com/
And here's a link to a book I found very helpful. It's "Castles and Ancient Monuments of Ireland" by Damien Noonan. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1854107526/qid=1035405274/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_2_3/026-2841186-1698836

You might try "Castles and Strongholds of Ireland" (1993) by Mike Salter. This gives a brief regional guide to castles in Ireland.

For a more authoratative book try "The Medieval Castle in Ireland" by David Sweetman (1999). The author of the latter is the chief archaeologist of Duchas, the Irish government agency that cares for ancient monuments. This book contains an extensive bibliography to other books and articles on the subject.

Yes they are good books, the 16 floor plans I have up on my site are used with permission from Mike Salters book you mentioned and the 18 that are nearing completion are hand drawn using some of the ones from "The Medieval Castle in Ireland" by David Sweetman and others as a basses.

In addition to those detailed I would also recommend the following:

Castles and Fortifications in Ireland 1485 - 1945 - Paul M Kerrigan - The Collins Press 1995 (good for the later history of castles).

The Castles of County Cork - James N Healy - The Mercier Press - 1988 (good for Cork).

Castles in Ireland - Tom McNeill - Routledge - 1997

Irish Castle - Harold G Leask - Dundalgan Press - 1941 (a good general study).

The Archaeological Inventories and Surveys produced by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (incomplete - but covers Cork, Wexford, Waterford, Westmeath, Louth and others). In addition the Archaeological Survey of County Down - H.M.S.O. - 1966 (excellent survey - still waiting for second volume).

On the web the Archaeological Data Service http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/ - is very good for Northern Ireland.

Again, thank you very much. I'll see if I can get some of the books that were recommended.
