Hello, I just signed up, so I am new to this. My husband and I have just planned a trip to Germany to do a 7 day tour of castles. I am absolutely excited! This is my dream vacation and I am going to make it come true! Has anyone ever been on a castle tour to Germany, and if so, what can I expect? And our there other places that anyone would know of that does castle tours, Ireland, Scotland, etc. and wraps it up in one as far as costs go? I realize that no one can advertise, but maybe can give me some good web sites to go to.

i have been in many parts of germany to visit castles and really depends on which part of germany where you are going, what you can expect. germany has really all sort of castles.

As I live in Switzerland and know many german castles, I can only highly recommend to go on castle-tours there. It depends on what you like to see - great ruins or romatic castles still intact. Before you start, have a look at

The site's in german, but contains detailed information, plans and pictures of over 600 castles in germany, over 70 in Switzerland and hundreds more all over Europe.

I totally agree with Peter, Burg Eltz is probably the most lovely castle of Germany, hidden away in a beautiful valley.

With regard to 'those castles' I also fully agree with Peter and Merlin, they aren't castles. They are big palaces or mansions. Especially the Nymphenburg is worth visiting, it is a beautiful palace from the 17th and 18th century in a big park with many follies in a suburb of Munich.
Also Hohenschwangau is a nice neogothic mansion of the father of Ludwig II. Herrenchiemsee has its charm in the fact that the building isn't finished and its on beautiful island. With respect to Linderhof I have good memories when I visited it when I was about 4 ot 5 years old (the guide did a great tour for little children like me then, with secret passages). And to Neuschwanstein I just can say I dislike it, I have been there once, there are too many tourists and the building is too big, too rough, and it feels too cold. Normally I love every castle and mansionhouse (also teh castellad ones from the 19th century like Kreuzenstein, or Hohenzollern or Marienburg near Hannover), but just not this one. But i am glad it is there, because it proceeds much money for the 'Bavarian Castle and gardens trust', which maintains many real castles (p.e. Burghausen) and palaces, buildings who really can use the money.

no i don't think you shouldn't cancel your tour, because it is not tour of real castles, or because we say we don't like that particular red white castle.

I think it is a worthwhile visit to do, you visit one of the most beautiful countrysides of Germany. Nymphenburg is really a beautiful palace a voyage worth, also Munich is a fine city with its biergartens. And the other places are also nice places to visit or at least to have been there, they are placed on a beautiful places. I for my part I am glad to have been there in Neuschwanstein, it was to say an experience through which I admire other castles much more.

Good info about the places you are going to visit, you can find on the site of the Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (~Bavarian castletrust). This trust looks after all the places you are going to visit and much more.
